Southwest Youth Services is partnering with New Mexico State University and the State of New Mexico Sports Authority to host the 2008 Indigenous Soccer Cup, an international seven-a-side soccer tournament with youth leadership, life skills, and college/university prep components. The ISC will be held at New Mexico State University, in Las Cruces, New Mexico, from July 20-July 26, 2008.
Tournament Format:
- Teams will be made up of 12 players, two coaches and a manager (coaches and manager will serve as chaperones)
- Seven vs. seven format – six field players and one goalkeeper (reduced numbers will immerse players in a smaller game and allow emerging soccer communities to participate in the ISC)
- Preliminary rounds of a minimum of three games in round-robin pool play
- Playoff rounds are single elimination (each team is guaranteed four games)
Team Composition:
- Boys and Girls age divisions: U-13, U-16, and U-20 (players can ‘play up’ in an older division)
- Players must be members of a state or federally recognized U.S. or Canadian Aboriginal tribe
- Appeals regarding tribal affiliation must be directed to the 2008 ISC Council
- Coaches and managers are not required to be members of a tribe recognized by U.S. state or Canadian provincial/territorial government
Cost:
- Each player is responsible for a $250 registration fee
Two coaches and 1 chaperone per team may attend for free
- Fee covers: seven day, six night tournament and room and board, as well as registration fees, referee costs, field and special event fees
